We didn’t start this war internet users have with ads - We might have moaned about banner ads, but it was only when they started making noises when we might be listening to music or a podcast or whatever, causing two sound sorces at once, that we started trying to block ads universally rather than just a specific type of ad (pop ups).

And since then ads have gotten worse - Actual malware rather than merely breaking one of the fundamental sins of web design - though shalt not autoplay anything with sound. And the more aggressive a website is with ‘please turn off adblock’ the less I trust it to bother to vet ads and advertisers to make sure they’re not installing malware.

Not to mention that the idea that avoiding ads is “freeloading” is hilariously backward. Advertisement is a transaction between the platform and the advertiser, the user has no obligation to provide the views/clicks the platform has promised. Using an adblocker isn’t freeloading in the same way that leaving the room to get a snack during a commercial break isn’t cheating the tv network.

Ok y’all, I work as a web developer and I’m here to tell you that you are 100% right and that it’s shit. SO I’m going to tell you how to get around websites that block you from using their website if you’re using an adblocker. 

Every website uses a language called JavaScript; long story short it’s a website language that allows developers to do the crazy shit you see on websites. Now the easiest thing to do is to disable JavaScript to stop them from knowing you have an adblocker:

Oh no! I’m blocked from viewing the website. It would be a terrible shame if I were able to right click and select the “inspect” feature

Click the three dots in the top right and open the “Settings” Menu

And then scrolled down to “Debugger” and checked the “Disable Javascript Option”

And then just refreshed the page

joking about adults who rely on their parents (you know, the classic “grown men who live in their mom’s basement” joke) does harm disabled people, by the way. it doesn’t matter if you don’t think you’re targeting us. you are.

i’m getting my own living space for the first time ever in two weeks. it’s in my mom’s basement in a new house. i’m physically and psychologically disabled, i have multiple severe mental health conditions, multiple physical disorders, i use a powerchair, i have to spend most of my time in bed, etc… of course its in my mom’s basement. i’m lucky to have a mom who cares for my support needs.

you know why i cant live fully on my own? sometimes im in so much pain or so sick i cant get out of bed for days, and if i was alone, i’d starve. i can’t go outside much, and on top of my mental health issues, living in total isolation would destroy me. i can’t manage appointments or finances or any of that on my own. i wasn’t able to finish high school due to my physical and mental issues. i can’t get a job, it takes all of my energy to do so much as take care of my hygiene, and i’m terrified of people. living on my own is dangerous for me.

this is a dream come true. we’re getting a house where i can try to be independent, but if i can’t, i’m safe.

and yet, i have to fear all of the implications that will have for my social life, if i’m ever able to get one. i’ll have to tell people to go around back to get into my house, and when they ask why, i’ll have to tell them i’m in my mom’s basement. and it doesn’t help that people frequently see my autistic traits and deem me a creep - great, im a creep in my moms basement, this is going to do wonders. and i’m sure all of my other mental issues will make that even better. /s

like, i dont care if youre joking about the neurotypical able-bodied people who “leech” off of their parents - first off, if you really were, i don’t know where the creepy part of the joke comes in, and secondly… people have their reasons. i dont know of many people who willingly decide to keep living with their parents in a basement if they had the ability to go to their own apartment. it is not a moral failing to struggle with independence as an adult. stop acting like it is

as a huge lover of birds, 90% of the concern against wind turbines being used for energy is literally just pro fossil fuel propaganda. birds ARE at a risk however there is a lot of strategies even as simple as painting one of the blades that reduces a lot of accidental deaths. additionally renewable energy sources will do more in favor of the environment that would positively impact birds (and all of us). one study found over one million bird deaths from wind turbines. while that is a shockingly high number and we should work to drastically shrink it, at least 1.3 billion birds die to outdoor cats on a yearly basis. it was never about caring about birds

there was a study done in 2015 that shows an even greater possible yearly divide than the 2012 one

I am so curious about these numbers, so I tried to look into it a bit:

so, 80m cats killing around 2b birds a year would mean that each cat was killing around… 30 birds a year, on average. that seems pretty plausible.

i’ve seen people quote numbers like “50 birds a week” and that seemed really high.

i note, btw, that the “6.3-22.3 billion mammals” probably includes a significant number of rodents, which is actually one of the reasons humans keep cats, because without them we have rodent problems, but … yeah this really does make it hard to believe that the wind turbines are the problem here.

Tumblr staff says twitter-dash here to stay

Hey all, I made a support ticket earlier trying to politely complain and let staff know that I (and many of us) are not happy with the dashboard layout change. I suggested perhaps being able to toggle it off, not getting rid of it entirely (referencing that blog/dash customizability seemed to be important in tumblr staffcon2023) and this was the response I received
